Groomers Lung – What is it?

Groomer’s Lung is a term used in the pet grooming industry that describes pulmonary lung disease. Pulmonary lung disease is caused by the inhalation of small particles and debris, such as dog hair and dander. This is a high risk for dog groomers, especially in mobile environments, as well as several other industries. There are several nicknames for this disease that typically cover multiple medical diagnosis. Breathing in this hair, dander, dust and dirt particles continues to build up in your lungs over time and will cause health issues.

What are the Symptoms and Cure?

Some symptoms of Groomer’s Lung includes coughing, shortness of breath, coughing up blood and tightness of the chest. Some possible diagnosis of this term include bronchiectasis, asthma, pneumoconiosis and more. The sad and scary thing about Groomer’s lung is that there is no cure, so it is very important to take the proper precautions and prevent this horrible disease!

How to Prevent Groomer’s Lung?

The best way to prevent Groomer’s Lung is to reduce the amount of dirt and debris we inhale during grooming. It is very important to wear a mask, especially when drying cats or dogs as this is the time most debris are flying in the air for us to breathe in. Make sure you are only blowing out clean coats, using proper air filters and using clipper vacs which vacuum the hair as you are clipping it.
